Is the ECU faulty, or is something else stopping the car?
A no-start or communication fault is a reason to investigate, not proof that the ECU needs replacing. The first step is to separate vehicle-side faults from a damaged controller.
Faults appear and disappear
Record the fault codes and circumstances. Heat, moisture, connectors, and supply voltage can change the diagnosis.
A donor unit is installed but the car will not start
The donor may have incompatible hardware or vehicle-specific authorization data; another programming path may be needed.
Vehicle and controller identification
BMW, Audi and Mercedes: start with the controller, not the badge.
The same make and model can use different ECU hardware across engines and production dates. These examples help identify a request; they are not a blanket list of supported units.
- BMW DME / DDE
- Include the engine, production date and the complete original and donor labels. DME or DDE identifies the controller’s role, not a guarantee that the two units can be cloned.
- Audi / Volkswagen Bosch MED17 and EDC17
- Photograph the full family suffix, Bosch number and vehicle-manufacturer number. A MED17 or EDC17 family name alone does not identify interchangeable hardware.
- Mercedes-Benz engine controllers
- Send the Mercedes part number, engine details and controller hardware/software IDs. MED17 variants, for example, must be reviewed by exact application rather than grouped into one universal cloning service.
Identify the platform using these reviewed immobilizer references. A reference is not confirmation of coding or cloning support.
Before a data transfer
The two ECU labels matter.
The original and replacement units are compared by manufacturer, part number, hardware and software identification, physical condition, and the available read/write method. Matching a connector or vehicle model alone is not enough.
- Send clear photos of both ECU labels.
- Include the VIN, symptoms, fault codes, and prior repair attempts.
- Keep the original ECU: readable data may determine the repair path.

Questions about car ecu cloning.
Can you clone a BMW, Audi or Mercedes ECU just from the model name?
No. BMW DME/DDE identification, the full Audi or Volkswagen Bosch MED17/EDC17 variant, or a Mercedes controller part number must be checked against the exact vehicle and donor. These are identification examples, not a guarantee that every unit is supported.
Do you offer mobile ECU cloning in Orlando?
Mobile service is available in the Orlando area for supported jobs. Some cloning procedures may still require controlled bench work depending on the module and read/write method.
What if the original ECU still communicates but has a fault?
Keep it and send the scan results, symptoms and both module labels. Communication does not prove that every required data area is readable, but the original may still contain useful vehicle-specific information. Diagnosis determines whether cloning, repair or another programming path is appropriate.
